Florida Humidity Can Grow Mold Inside Your AC | BioShieldUV Cutaway of a home air handler with a UV-C lamp shining across the wet evaporator coil.

For Florida Homeowners

Florida Humidity Can Grow
Mold Inside Your AC.
MagShield Stops It At The Coil.

Your AC’s evaporator coil is wet by design, and in Florida, it rarely dries out. MagShield puts lab-tested UV-C on that coil, installs in about 15-30 minutes, and comes with a 90-day Clean Coil Promise.

How UV-C Works

BioShield UV, Aimed Where The Moisture Sits

Cutaway view inside a stainless air handler: the finned evaporator coil stands on the left and a BioShield UV-C lamp is bracketed to the duct wall on the right, its blue light washing across the coil face.
  • Works alongside your filter.  The EPA recommends UV be used with filtration, not instead of it.

  • Shines 253.7 nm UV-C on the coil, around the clock.  The EPA describes UV lamps used this way as targeting mold and bacteria growing on HVAC surfaces like cooling coils.

  • Mounts by magnet inside your system, facing the evaporator coil. MagShield attaches by magnet with no drilling. ApxShield mounts permanently through the duct wall.

ApxShield MagShield

~30 minutes, permanent install

~15 minutes, no tools, no wiring

  1. A hand flipping the HVAC breaker off inside an open electrical panel. 01

    Cut power at the breaker

Switch off the system and the circuit feeding it.

  2. An installer holding the BioShieldUV Classic unit flat against the sheet-metal duct wall. 02

Mount the UV-C in the duct

Drill the mounting hole near the coil and secure the unit.

  3. The mounted UV-C unit wired to a transformer, with a hand holding the power block. 03

    Wire it in

Connect to your HVAC's (24V/120V) power.

Not comfortable with wiring? Any HVAC tech can do this.

  4. The installed Classic lamp glowing blue inside the air handler, facing the coil. 04

    Restore power, check the light

The indicator confirms it's running. Never look directly at the lit lamp.

Turn off the system and open the cabinet

Find a spot with a clear view of the coil.

  2. A gloved hand wiping the inside wall of the air handler before placing the magnetic lamp. 02

Wipe the surface, place the magnet

The magnetic base holds the unit in place.

  3. An installer holding the MagShield lamp by its magnetic base inside the duct. 03

Plug in, or wire to 24V

Wall-plug version uses a 120V outlet. Ballast version connects to your HVAC.

Safety

Low Ozone Emission, By Design

The EPA warns that some UV air devices produce ozone, a lung irritant. Ozone comes from 185 nm light, so every BioShieldUV lamp is tuned to 253.7 nm, the germicidal wavelength, and filters out 185 nm with ozone-free quartz.

Both MagShield and ApxShield are ETL listed to UL 60335-2-40. UV-C can harm eyes and skin, so the lamp only runs sealed inside your air handler or ductwork, never in open living space.

Florida This Season

What Your Home Is Up Against This Year

  • Palm trees bending in wind and heavy rain along a Florida causeway.

    Weather Outlook

This Dry Season May Not Be Dry

NOAA gives El Niño better than 90% odds this winter. El Niño generally brings Florida above-average rain through spring. More moisture in the air means more condensation on the one part of your home built to stay wet: your AC coil.

    Mild Fall Days

    Cool, But Clammy? Here’s Why.

Your AC needs about three minutes each cycle to reach full moisture removal. Mild fall days mean shorter runs, so humidity can linger. The EPA notes mold and bacteria can grow where condensation sits on cooling coils and drain pans.

    Back For The Season

Locked All Summer? So Was Your AC.

In a UCF study of Florida homes left without AC, indoor humidity averaged 62–73% from June to October. Researchers noted mold and mildew grow when humidity stays above about 70% for long stretches. Start the season by getting your coil clean.

    Who Feels It First

Some People Feel Indoor Mold First.

DOH lists babies, children, older adults, people with asthma or allergies, and those with weakened immune systems as the people indoor mold may affect sooner and more severely. That's why stopping mold where your air passes with an UV-C light matters.

    That Musty Smell

Musty Smell When The AC Kicks On?

An earthy or musty odor may point to a mold problem. Hence, DOH recommends routinely inspecting your evaporator coil, drain pan and drain lines. BioShieldUV keeps UV-C on your coil around the clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no outlet in my AC closet. Now what?

Choose the 24V ballast version, which draws power from your HVAC system (wiring required). If you'd rather add an outlet, use a licensed electrician.

Is it safe with kids and pets in the house?

The lamp only ever runs sealed inside your air handler or ductwork, never in open living space, and the last step of every install is confirming no opening remains through which UV-C light can escape. Ozone output is independently tested at 0.014 ppm — below the 0.050 ppm FDA and CARB limit.

What if it arrives damaged or won't turn on?

Send us photos and we ship the replacement or the missing part expedited at no cost. This is not a return — you keep what you have, there is no return label and no fee, and if it was damaged in transit we file the carrier claim ourselves. If a brand-new bulb will not light, check the pin seating first: a loose connection is the most common cause.

My system flooded in a storm. Will this fix it?

No. BioShieldUV treats biological growth on the coil surface and is rated for dry locations only — it does not replace filtration, ventilation or professional remediation. After standing water, have the system inspected and dried out first. Once it is dry, UV-C helps keep the coil clean from that point on.

How often do bulbs need replacing?

Every 10 months, which is roughly 8,000 hours of continuous running. Past that the lamp still glows blue but its UV-C output has faded, so replace on schedule regardless of what it looks like. Guardian Club members get a fresh bulb shipped automatically.
